This landmark is the most widely recognized feature in the entire park. It is a cultural symbol for the region. You can find its image on Utah license plates. It also appears on a postage stamp for Utah's centennial anniversary. This stamp celebrated the state joining the Union in 1896. The arch even served as a path for the 2002 Winter Olympics torch relay.

The arch is formed from a specific type of rock called Entrada Sandstone. The geological process that created it involved weathering and erosion. Originally, the area contained a large sandstone fin. Over a long period, the elements wore the rock away. This process gradually carved the stone into its current shape. Other arches in the park formed through these same geological mechanisms. However, most other arches have less dramatic shapes. This makes the unique silhouette of Delicate Arch much more famous.

Local history shows that the arch had many different names. Early cowboys used colorful nicknames for the formation. They called it "the Chaps" and "the Schoolmarm's Bloomers." Other names included "Salt Wash Arch" and "Old Maids Bloomers." There were even names like "Pants Crotch" and "Marys Bloomers." The current name came from Frank Beckwith. He led the Arches National Monument Scientific Expedition in the winter of 1933–1934. He chose the name Delicate Arch for the site.

The arch has a complex history with the National Park Service. It was not part of the original Arches National Monument. That monument was first designated in 1929. The arch was only included later when the monument was enlarged in 1938. In the 1950s, officials considered a way to protect the stone. They investigated applying a clear plastic coating to the surface. They hoped this would stop erosion and prevent destruction. Ultimately, the National Park Service abandoned the idea. They decided it was impractical and went against their core principles.

Human activity has sometimes caused concerns for the arch's safety. In September 2000, a photographer named Michael Fatali started a fire under the arch. He did this to demonstrate nighttime photography techniques. The fire discolored parts of the sandstone. As a result, Fatali was placed on probation. He was also fined $10,900 in restitution to the park. This money helped pay for the cleanup efforts. Such events show how fragile the natural environment can be.

Climbing has also been a topic of debate regarding the arch. In May 2006, a climber named Dean Potter performed six free solo ascents. Free soloing means climbing without ropes for safety. At that time, park rules did not explicitly forbid climbing named arches. However, most climbers felt they should not climb these famous formations. Controversy arose when photos appeared to show damage from top roping. Top roping is a climbing technique using a rope from above. Potter denied causing damage with this method. He did use a counterweighted rope and four cams for protection. The National Park Service has since closed the loophole. Now, climbing on any named arch in the park is prohibited year-round.

Tourism is a major part of life at Delicate Arch. Many people visit the site to see the landmark in person. The trail to the arch is a 3-mile round trip. It includes an elevation change of 480 feet. The path is well defined for the first half mile. Then, the trail becomes a steep incline over open rock. The final 200 yards involve walking along a narrow ledge.

Because it is so popular, the trailhead parking lot fills up quickly. Despite the crowds, the area supports local wildlife. For example, white-throated swifts nest in the top of the arch during the summer.
