This landmark is very well known to many people. You can see its shape on Utah license plates. It even appears on a postage stamp for the state's centennial. The arch was part of a path for the 2002 Winter Olympics torch relay. It is one of the main things tourists come to see in the park.

The arch was made by a thing called weathering and erosion. It is made of a rock called Entrada Sandstone. Long ago, there was a large fin of this sandstone. The wind and rain slowly wore the rock away over time. This left the beautiful arch shape we see today. Other arches in the park formed in this same way. However, they do not have as dramatic a shape as this one.

Local cowboys gave the arch many funny names in the past. They called it "the Chaps" or "the Schoolmarm's Bloomers." Other names included "Salt Wash Arch" and "Old Maids Bloomers." A man named Frank Beckwith gave it its real name. He led a scientific expedition in the winter of 1933–1934. The arch was added to the national monument in 1938. It was not part of the original area set aside in 1929.

Visiting the arch is a big adventure for many people. The trail to see the arch is 3 miles for a round trip. The path has an elevation change of 480 feet. It is easy to walk for the first half mile. After that, the trail goes up a steep incline over open rock. The last 200 yards of the path has a narrow ledge.

The parking lot at the trailhead fills up very quickly.

People have had many different ideas about how to care for the arch. In the 1950s, experts thought about using a clear plastic coating. They wanted to stop erosion and protect the stone. They decided not to do this because it was not practical. Now, the park has rules to keep the arch safe. For example, climbers are not allowed to climb any named arches. This helps protect the rock from damage for a long time.
