It is part of a larger urban corridor known as the Wasatch Front. This combined statistical area has a population of approximately 2.8 million people. The geography of the region is defined by its semi-arid valley and nearby water bodies. The city sits near the Great Salt Lake, which influenced its original name. In its early years, the settlement was known as Great Salt Lake City. The word "Great" was eventually dropped from the name in 1868. The city's layout follows a standard compass grid plan. This grid system uses the southeast corner of Temple Square as its origin point. This location serves as the starting point for the Salt Lake meridian. This meridian is used to determine addresses throughout the Salt Lake Valley.

Long before European settlers arrived, the Salt Lake Valley was home to many Indigenous groups. The Shoshone, Weber Ute, and Paiute peoples had lived in the valley for thousands of years. The Northwestern Shoshone and the Western Goshute also held territory in this region. The Western Goshute had specific names for local geographic features. They called the Jordan River Pi'o-gwût and City Creek So'ho-gwût. They also had a name for Red Butte Canyon. The land was considered public domain by the United States. No aboriginal title held by the Northwestern Shoshone was ever ceded to the U.S. through a treaty.

In July 1847, Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young arrived in the valley. They were seeking to escape religious persecution in the eastern United States. They traveled into Mexican Territory to find a secluded area for their religion. Upon arrival, Brigham Young declared the location suitable for settlement. The pioneers immediately began building an extensive irrigation network. This system moved water to crops to support the growing population in the dry climate. They also learned to harvest sego lily bulbs for food from the Shoshone. The name "sego" actually comes from the Shoshone term "seego."

As the city grew, it became a vital hub for transportation and trade. It earned the nickname "The Crossroads of the West" due to several factors. Mining booms and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad drove economic growth. The railroad reached nearby at Promontory Summit in 1869. By 1870, the railroad was connected directly to the city. In 1913, the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway, passed through the city.

Today, major freeways like I-15 and I-80 intersect in the city. An additional belt route, I-215, also serves the metropolitan area.

The city's history includes complex social and political shifts. During the mid-1800s, there were significant disputes with the federal government. These tensions led to the Utah War between 1857 and 1858. The city also saw waves of international immigration. An ethnic Chinese community lived in a district known as Plum Alley.

Later, Japanese residents established a Japantown with a Buddhist temple and a Christian chapel. The city is also known for its distinct political culture. It maintains a politically liberal atmosphere that contrasts with the conservative leaning of the rest of Utah. This culture includes a significant LGBT community that hosts the annual Utah Pride Festival.

Tourism is also a massive part of the economy. Visitors come for religious tourism, outdoor recreation, and skiing. The city hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. On July 24, 2024, the International Olympic Committee selected the city to host the 2034 Winter Olympics.

Despite its success, the region faces serious environmental and geological threats. Sustained drought in Utah has created problems for water security. This drought has caused the Great Salt Lake to drop to record low levels.

As the lake recedes, it exposes arsenic in the ground. This arsenic may become airborne as poisonous dust, which can affect local residents. Additionally, the city is at risk for major earthquake damage. This danger is amplified by two offshoots of the Wasatch Fault. These two faults join together directly underneath the downtown area.
