As of the 2020 census, Reno had a population of 264,165 people. It is the third most populous city in Nevada. It is also the 78th most populous city in the United States. Many people call it "The Biggest Little City in the World."

The city's identity is tied to its unique geography and history.

Reno occupies a valley known colloquially as the Truckee Meadows. The region is shaped by complex geological features. Numerous faults exist throughout this area. Most of these are normal faults, which involve vertical motion. This motion is associated with the extension of the Earth's lithosphere. The lithosphere is the rigid outer layer of our planet. This process also causes the uplift of mountain ranges like the Sierra Nevada.

One area of active faulting is Dog Valley, located west of Reno.

The history of the region began long before the city was founded. Archaeological finds show that the prehistoric Martis people lived in the Reno area. In the mid-1850s, pioneers settled in the fertile Truckee Meadows. They practiced subsistence farming to survive. They also provided services to travelers on the California Trail. A major shift occurred in 1859 with the discovery of silver at the Comstock Lode. This discovery triggered a massive mining rush. Thousands of emigrants moved west to find fortunes in the silver mines. To connect Virginia City to the California Trail, Charles W. Fuller built a log toll bridge across the Truckee River in 1859.

Myron C. Lake played a vital role in the city's early development.

After buying Fuller's bridge, Lake added a grist mill and a livery stable. He renamed the community "Lake's Crossing." He later deeded land to the Central Pacific Railroad. This deal ensured a depot would be built at Lake's Crossing. The town of Reno officially formed on May 9, 1868. Charles Crocker, a railroad superintendent, named the town after Major General Jesse L. Reno. The General was a Union officer killed during the American Civil War. In 1871, Reno became the county seat of Washoe County.

During the twentieth century, Reno gained a unique national reputation. Because Nevada had relatively lax divorce laws, people traveled there to end marriages. In 1931, the state reduced the residency requirement to only six weeks. This led to Reno being called the "Divorce Capital of the World." People referred to this process as the "six-week cure." This industry brought many visitors to local hotels and businesses. Many famous celebrities, such as Jack Dempsey and Rita Hayworth, visited Reno for this reason. However, this industry declined after the 1970s. This happened because other states, like California, changed their own divorce laws.

As the divorce industry slowed, gambling became a primary economic driver.

Nevada legalized open gambling on March 19, 1931. This change was led by local entrepreneur Bill Graham. The Bank Club became one of the largest casinos in the world. Other pioneers like Bill Harrah also helped establish the gaming industry. Today, Reno is also a major center for outdoor recreation. Its proximity to the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe attracts many tourists. The city is also a hub for education. It is home to the University of Nevada at Reno. This is the flagship campus of the state's university system.

In recent years, Reno has entered a new era of growth. The region is transforming into a major technology center in the United States. This shift is driven by large-scale investments from major companies. These include Amazon, Tesla, Panasonic, Microsoft, Apple, and Google. These investments are helping to diversify the local economy beyond gaming. The city continues to balance its historic identity with modern industrial progress.
