Reno is a major city located in the northwest section of Nevada.
The city's identity is tied to its unique geography and history.

The history of the region began long before the city was founded. Archaeological finds show that the prehistoric Martis people lived in the Reno area. In the mid-1850s, pioneers settled in the fertile Truckee Meadows. They practiced subsistence farming to survive. They also provided services to travelers on the California Trail. A major shift occurred in 1859 with the discovery of silver at the Comstock Lode. This discovery triggered a massive mining rush. Thousands of emigrants moved west to find fortunes in the silver mines. To connect Virginia City to the California Trail, Charles W. Fuller built a log toll bridge across the Truckee River in 1859.
Myron C. Lake played a vital role in the city's early development.
During the twentieth century, Reno gained a unique national reputation. Because Nevada had relatively lax divorce laws, people traveled there to end marriages. In 1931, the state reduced the residency requirement to only six weeks. This led to Reno being called the "Divorce Capital of the World." People referred to this process as the "six-week cure." This industry brought many visitors to local hotels and businesses. Many famous celebrities, such as Jack Dempsey and Rita Hayworth, visited Reno for this reason. However, this industry declined after the 1970s. This happened because other states, like California, changed their own divorce laws.
As the divorce industry slowed, gambling became a primary economic driver.
In recent years, Reno has entered a new era of growth. The region is transforming into a major technology center in the United States. This shift is driven by large-scale investments from major companies. These include Amazon, Tesla, Panasonic, Microsoft, Apple, and Google. These investments are helping to diversify the local economy beyond gaming. The city continues to balance its historic identity with modern industrial progress.
