The geology of the Sierra is a complex story of heat and pressure. More than 100 million years ago, a process called the Nevadan orogeny occurred. During this time, an island arc collided with the North American coast. This collision raised a chain of volcanoes. Later, a subduction zone formed at the edge of the continent. This happened when the Farallon Plate began to dive beneath the North American Plate. As it sank, it created magma. This magma rose in large plumes called plutons. These plutons formed deep underground to create the Sierra Nevada batholith. 
After the granite formed, the landscape changed through uplift and erosion. The range began to rise less than five million years ago. This uplift was caused by tectonic forces and faulting. This movement created steep fault block escarpments along the eastern edge. As the land rose, glaciers began to move across the surface. These glaciers sculpted the granite into deep canyons. They also exposed the light-colored rock that makes up the mountains today. These processes created a wide variety of elevations and climates. Because of this, the range contains five distinct life zones. These are areas with similar plant and animal communities.

This makes the Sierra Nevada a dynamic and changing part of the Earth.
