Nevada is a landlocked state located in the Western United States.

It is often categorized as part of the Mountain West or the Southwestern United States. The state shares borders with several other regions. To the northwest lies Oregon, and to the northeast is Idaho. California borders the state to the west. To the southeast, you will find Arizona, while Utah sits to the east. Nevada is the seventh-most extensive state in the country. However, it is only the 31st-most populous state. This means it has a large amount of land but relatively few people living on it.

The geography of Nevada is defined by its extreme dryness and high altitude.

It is the driest state in the United States. This happens because the state sits in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This shadow prevents much moisture from reaching the land. Much of the state consists of the Great Basin and parts of the Mojave Desert. The landscape is largely desert and semi-arid. Despite the dry air, Nevada has many high mountain ranges. These include the Toiyabe Range, the Ruby Mountains, and the Spring Mountains. These mountains act as "sky islands" of montane forests within the Great Basin. The state's name comes from the Spanish word for "snowy."

The history of the region began with Indigenous tribes. The Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe tribes inhabited the land long before Europeans arrived.

Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to reach the area. They named the region Nevada because of its snowy mountains. At that time, the land was part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. It later became part of Mexico after Mexico gained independence in 1821. The United States annexed the territory in 1848 following the Mexican–American War. In 1850, the area was incorporated into the New Mexico and Utah Territories.

A major turning point occurred in 1859 with the discovery of silver.

This discovery happened at the Comstock Lode near Virginia City. The silver rush caused a massive population boom. This growth led to the creation of the Nevada Territory in 1861. Nevada eventually became the 36th state on October 31, 1864. This happened during the American Civil War. Nevada was the second state added to the Union during that conflict. The statehood process was actually rushed to ensure political stability during the war. Even though the population was only about 40,000, Congress admitted it to the Union. This made Nevada the "Battle Born State."

Today, the population of Nevada is concentrated in specific areas.

Nearly three-quarters of the state's residents live in Clark County. This county contains the Las Vegas–Paradise metropolitan area. Las Vegas is the largest city in the state. The state capital is Carson City. In 1940, Nevada was the least-populated state in the country. It had only about 110,000 people at that time. Since then, legalized gambling and tourism have transformed the economy. The tourism industry is now the state's largest employer.

While tourism is huge, mining remains a vital part of the economy.

Nevada is the fourth-largest producer of gold in the entire world. The state's history with silver also earned it the nickname "The Silver State." Because of its native plants, it is also called the "Sagebrush State." The state is currently facing challenges from climate change. Droughts are becoming more frequent and severe. This puts a strain on the state's water security. To help, the Las Vegas area uses extensive water recycling. The state also invests heavily in solar power due to high solar irradiance.

Nevada is also becoming a leader in new technology and energy. The state is developing the largest lithium mine in the United States. Lithium is a critical component used in electric vehicle batteries. This connects Nevada's mining heritage to the future of clean energy. The state also hosts a large industrial park for electric vehicle resources. This shows how a desert state can adapt to a changing global environment. From the silver mines of the 1800s to modern lithium production, Nevada continues to evolve.
