Declension

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Words can change their shape. This is called declension. We add bits to the ends of words. These bits show many things.

They show if there is one thing or many. They show if a word owns something. They can even show if a word is a boy or a girl.

In English, we use these bits for nouns. We use them for pronouns too. For example, "I" changes to "me."

Some languages use many more bits. Latin uses bits to show a word's job. This helps people know what a word does in a sentence.

Changing words helps us speak clearly. It is a big part of how we talk.
