Debian is a special way to run a computer. It is known as a Linux distribution. A distribution is a large collection of software tools that work together.

This system is very important because it serves as a foundation. Many other popular systems, like Ubuntu, are built using Debian. It is the second-oldest Linux distribution still being made today. Only one other system, called Slackware, is older. Because it is so reliable, people use it for big tasks. It helps run servers and even works with artificial intelligence.

Working on Debian is a big team effort. It is developed openly by a group of volunteers. These helpers follow three main rules. These rules are the Debian Social Contract, the Debian Constitution, and the Debian Free Software Guidelines.

As of January 2026, there are over 1,400 active contributors. These people maintain and support more than 94,000 free packages. A package is like a small tool for a computer. Some packages let you browse the web with Firefox. Others help you edit pictures with GIMP or watch videos with VLC.

The history of Debian began in August 1993. A man named Ian Murdock started the project. He wanted to make a system that was easy to maintain. He named it "Debian" by combining his name with his girlfriend's name, Debra.

Early on, the Free Software Foundation helped sponsor the project. However, they stopped sponsoring it in 1995. This happened because of disagreements about software rules. To help with legal needs, members started a non-profit called Software in the Public Interest in 1997. This group helps protect the project's trademarks.

Debian has many interesting facts and names. Each new version gets a code name from the movie Toy Story. For example, the version from 2023 is called Bookworm. The version from 2019 was named Buster.

The system also uses a tool called APT to manage software. In 1996, a person named Bruce Perens became a leader. He helped create the rules for how the community works. Even big companies like Microsoft now support Debian. You can even use it inside Windows using a special tool.

You can think of Debian as a giant toolbox. Most of the tools inside are free for anyone to use. This means people can study them and share them.

Some people use these tools to build big things in the cloud. Others use them to run computers that learn from data. Whether it is a small laptop or a huge server, Debian provides the base. It stays strong because thousands of people work on it every single day. The project is always growing with new updates and new names.
