He is a composer who writes music. He is also a producer who helps other singers. A producer helps shape how a song sounds. He has won 16 Grammy Awards for his work. These awards are very special prizes in the music world. He has been nominated for many more over forty years. His music has reached the top of the charts many times.

Making great music involves many careful steps. Foster often plays the keyboard to help create a song. He works with arrangers to organize the instruments. Sometimes he works with an orchestral arranger like Jeremy Lubbock. They decide how many violins or horns should play. He also helps artists choose the best way to sing. In 1982, he recorded the musical Dreamgirls in just one take. This was different from his usual way of working.

Foster's journey started in Victoria, British Columbia. He was born on November 1, 1949. His parents noticed he had perfect pitch at age three. This means he can identify notes very easily. When he was 13, he heard The Beatles on the radio. That moment made him decide to become a musician. He later studied music at the University of Washington. He even played in a local band called The Teen Beats.

His career grew through many different places and groups. In 1966, he joined a stage band called The Strangers. They moved to London to perform for famous musicians. Later, he moved to Los Angeles to work in studios. He was in a band called Skylark in the 1970s. Their song "Wildflower" became a big hit in 1973. He also helped the band Chicago become successful again. He produced their albums Chicago 16, 17, and 18.

Music can also be a way to help people. In 1985, Foster started a charity project in Canada. He wanted to help people facing famine in Africa. He helped create the song "Tears Are Not Enough." This song brought many Canadian artists together. The project raised $3.2 million for famine relief. Ten percent of that money went to Canadian food banks.
