A dash is a long horizontal line used in writing. It helps readers understand how a sentence should flow. While it looks like a hyphen, a dash is usually longer.

There are three main types you might see. The en dash is a medium-length line. The em dash is the longest version. Finally, the horizontal bar is another type that varies in length. These marks are important for making writing clear and easy to read.

Each dash has a special job to do. An en dash often replaces the words "to" or "through." For example, you might write "ages 3–5" to show a range. It also connects two things that have a relationship, like a "New York–London flight." An em dash can mark a sudden break in a sentence. It can also set off an extra thought or show who said a quote.

The figure dash is used inside numbers. It has the same width as a digit to keep columns straight.

People have used dashes for hundreds of years. In the early 1600s, writers used them in plays by William Shakespeare. In those books, a dash could show a character pausing to think. It might also show a sudden change in what they were saying.

By the year 1733, the writer Jonathan Swift used the words "break" and "dash" to describe these marks. This shows that people have always found ways to use lines to change how we read.

Different groups of writers follow different rules for dashes. This is often called a "style guide." For instance, the APA style uses an en dash for ranges of numbers. However, the AMA style prefers using a simple hyphen for those same ranges.

Some guides say you should not use an en dash if it looks like subtraction. If you write "50 V–100 V," it might be confusing. In that case, it is better to just write "50 V to 100 V."

Using dashes is a bit like using tools in a workshop. You pick the right one for the specific job you are doing. Most computer keyboards only have a small hyphen-minus key. Because of this, many people use that short mark as a substitute.

Luckily, many modern word processors can fix this for you. They can automatically turn your short marks into the correct, longer dashes. This helps your writing look professional and polished.
