A dash is a long horizontal line. It is a mark used in writing. It looks like a hyphen but it is longer.

There are three main kinds of dashes. The en dash is a medium line. It is often used to show a range. It can mean the word "to." For example, you might write ages 3–5. The em dash is a very long line. It can mark a break in a sentence. It can also show where a quote comes from.

A third kind is the figure dash. It has the same width as a number. This helps keep columns of numbers straight. People have used dashes for a long time. In the 1600s, writers used them in plays. They used dashes to show a pause in speech. They could also show a change in subject. Today, many people use a hyphen on a keyboard to stand in for a dash. Computer programs often fix this for you. They turn the short mark into a real dash. This makes the writing look correct.
