Most notably, he provides the voice for Homer Simpson on the long-running animated series *The Simpsons*. Beyond Homer, he voices a wide variety of other characters on the show. These include Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Barney Gumble, and Groundskeeper Willie. He also voices Mayor Quimby, Sideshow Mel, and many others. His ability to create distinct personalities through sound is a central part of his professional legacy.

Creating these diverse voices requires significant technical skill and physical adjustment. To perform Homer Simpson, Castellaneta lowers his chin to his chest. He often tries to visualize the specific scene in his mind to improve his performance. This mental imagery helps him deliver the proper voice for each moment. For the character Barney Gumble, he once recorded a single, high-quality belch. He then used this specific recording as the standard for the character in future episodes. This helped maintain consistency despite the difficulty of performing the action repeatedly.

Castellaneta also uses accents and impressions to build his characters. When creating Groundskeeper Willie, he initially tried a Hispanic voice and a "big dumb Swede" accent. Both were rejected by director Sam Simon. He eventually settled on a grumpy Scotsman accent, which became the character's permanent identity. For Mayor Quimby, he improvised an accent that serves as a parody of the Kennedy family. Other characters are also based on real people or performers. For example, his impression of Sideshow Mel is based on actor Kelsey Grammer. The voice of Gil Gunderson is a spoof of actor Jack Lemmon.

His journey into performance began during his youth in Illinois. Born in Chicago in 1957, he grew up in River Forest and Oak Park. He developed a talent for impressions at a young age by listening to comedy records. His mother enrolled him in an acting class when he was 16 years old. He later attended Northern Illinois University to study art education. While working as a student teacher, he used impressions to entertain his students. He also participated in *The Ron Petke and His Dead Uncle Show*, a radio program at the university. This experience allowed him to practice writing material and switching rapidly between different voices.

After graduating in 1979, Castellaneta began his professional career. He worked at The Second City, a famous improvisational theatre in Chicago, from 1983 to 1987. His big break came when he auditioned for *The Tracey Ullman Show*. Although his first meeting with producers was underwhelming, Tracey Ullman traveled to Chicago to see him perform. His emotional performance about a blind comedian impressed her deeply. This led to his hiring for the animated shorts that would eventually become *The Simpsons*.

During the early seasons, he and Julie Kavner voiced Homer and Marge Simpson to save on hiring more actors.

Castellaneta's career is marked by significant professional recognition and high-level success. He has won four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance. In 1993, he received a special Annie Award for his individual achievement in animation. In 2000, the Simpson family was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His work has also been recognized by the Young Artist Awards. These honors reflect the massive cultural impact of his vocal performances over several decades.

His influence extends into the writing and production of the shows he works on. Castellaneta and his wife, Deb Lacusta, have written several episodes for *The Simpsons*. Their script for the episode "Days of Wine and D'oh'ses" was accepted after they spent nearly ten years updating it. They were also nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for the episode "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bangalore." In addition to writing, he is credited as a consulting producer. He has also held steady roles in other series like *Hey Arnold!*, *Futurama*, and *Darkwing Duck*. This versatility demonstrates his deep connection to the art of animation and storytelling.
