Most audiences know him as the voice of the titular character in SpongeBob SquarePants. He has performed this role since the series debuted in 1999. Kenny describes the voice of SpongeBob as a "child-man." This means the sound sits between a child and an adult. He compares the tone to performers like Stan Laurel or Jerry Lewis. He notes it is not quite a Charlie Brown voice, but rather something unique.

Voice acting requires a specific set of skills to convey personality through sound. Kenny has demonstrated this versatility by playing many distinct roles. He voices the Ice King in the series Adventure Time and its spinoff Fionna and Cake. In The Powerpuff Girls, he provides the voices for the Mayor and the Narrator. His range extends to video games, where he is famous as the voice of Spyro the Dragon. He has also voiced characters in the Transformers: Animated series, such as Starscream and Isaac Sumdac.

A major turning point occurred through his connection with marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg. While working on Rocko's Modern Life, Kenny met Hillenburg. Hillenburg was developing an ocean-themed concept based on his background in marine science. He chose the sea sponge as his main character because it was a strange and funny animal. Hillenburg approached Kenny in 1997 to voice the role. The show, SpongeBob SquarePants, premiered on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999. It became a massive commercial success and remains a cultural staple.

Kenny's excellence in his craft has been recognized with several prestigious honors. He has won two Daytime Emmy Awards for his work as SpongeBob SquarePants. These awards were granted in 2018 and 2020 for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program. He has also won two Annie Awards, which are honors specifically for animation. He earned one Annie Award in 2010 for SpongeBob and another in 2014 for the Ice King. In 2022, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Syracuse Area Music Awards.

Beyond traditional animation, Kenny participates in diverse media formats. He has appeared in live-action segments as Patchy the Pirate. In 2024, he used motion capture to voice SpongeBob during a special Nickelodeon broadcast of Super Bowl LVIII. This broadcast was designed to be family-friendly for viewers aged 2 to 102. He also performs in live theater, such as the SpongeBob SquarePants Broadway musical. His work spans from YouTube web series like Talking Tom & Friends to major film productions like Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.

Kenny's personal life is also connected to his professional world. He met his wife, Jill Talley, in 1992 while working on The Edge. They have collaborated on many projects, including SpongeBob SquarePants. In that series, Talley provides the voice for Karen, the computer character. They have two children, Mack and Nora, and live in Studio City, California. His career illustrates how specialized vocal skills can bridge the gap between different types of entertainment.
