Andy Kaufman was a famous American entertainer and performance artist.

He was often called an "anti-comedian" because he disdained traditional joke-telling. Most comedians promise to make an audience laugh through shared humor. Kaufman offered a different promise. He only promised to try to entertain his audience as best he could. He often used elaborate ruses and pranks to provoke negative or confused reactions. This counterintuitive approach made him a unique figure in American culture.

Kaufman's performance style relied heavily on distinct, often absurd characters. One of his first major successes was the Foreign Man. This character claimed to be from a fictional island called "Caspiar" in the Caspian Sea. The Foreign Man used a high-pitched, heavily accented voice.

In his act, Kaufman would stand perfectly still while lip-syncing to the Mighty Mouse theme song. He also performed intentionally poor celebrity impersonations. A famous part of this act involved an Elvis Presley impression. He would throw a leather jacket into the crowd and then immediately ask for it back.

His career moved from small comedy clubs to major television success. In 1975, he appeared on the first season of Saturday Night Live. This helped him reach a much wider audience. Later, he transitioned the Foreign Man character into Latka Gravas for the ABC sitcom Taxi. He played Latka in 79 of the show's 114 episodes between 1978 and 1983. This role brought him significant fame and two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor.

His manager, George Shapiro, encouraged this move to help Kaufman achieve stardom.

Kaufman also created characters that blurred the line between fiction and reality. Tony Clifton was an obnoxious, rude lounge singer. Clifton was so convincing that some people believed he was a real person rather than a character. Kaufman even insisted that Clifton be hired for a guest role on Taxi as if he were real. This led to a staged tantrum where Clifton was escorted out by security. Kaufman found great delight in the resulting news reports. This ability to confuse the public was a central part of his art.

Kaufman's performances often included large-scale, unpredictable events. At a 1979 show in Carnegie Hall, he used several elaborate tricks. He invited a "grandmother" to sit on stage, but she eventually revealed herself to be comedian Robin Williams. He also performed a stunt where an elderly woman pretended to have a heart attack. To end the show, he took his entire audience on 24 buses to eat milk and cookies. These massive, strange gestures showed his commitment to unconventional entertainment.

His work sometimes involved physical confrontation and controversy. In 1982, Kaufman performed a professional wrestling villain act on Late Night with David Letterman. This involved a staged encounter with wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler. The fact that this fight was planned remained a secret for over ten years. He also faced tension on Saturday Night Live. During an Elvis sketch, he broke character and apologized to the audience. He claimed he felt pressured into a sketch that he disagreed with.

Andy Kaufman was born on January 17, 1949, in New York City. He grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in Great Neck, Long Island. He began performing at children's parties at age nine. He later studied television production at Grahm Junior College in Boston.

Kaufman died of lung cancer on May 16, 1984, at the age of 35. Because his career was built on hoaxes, some rumors suggested he faked his death. He remains respected for his willingness to challenge how people define comedy.
