He was often called an "anti-comedian." This name came because he did not like telling traditional jokes. He believed a comedian should make people laugh with them. Instead, Kaufman promised only to try his best to entertain. He wanted to see how audiences would react to his strange ideas. He often caused people to feel confused or even upset. This was part of his unique way of working.

Kaufman used many different characters to perform his acts. One famous character was the Foreign Man. This character spoke in a high, squeaky voice. He claimed to be from a fake island called Caspiar.

During this act, he would lip-sync to music. He would also do bad impressions of famous people. One funny part was his Elvis Presley impression. He would throw a leather jacket into the crowd. Then, he would immediately ask for it back.

His career grew through many different types of shows. He first worked in small comedy clubs in the early 1970s. In 1975, he appeared on the first season of Saturday Night Live. This helped many new people see his talent. He later played a character named Latka Gravas on the show Taxi. He played Latka from 1978 until 1983. This role made him a very big star. He was even nominated for Golden Globe awards for his acting.

Kaufman also created characters that felt very real to people. One such character was a rude singer named Tony Clifton. Clifton was so convincing that some people did not know he was a character. Kaufman even insisted that Clifton be hired for a role on Taxi. This caused a scene where Clifton was escorted out by security.

Kaufman also acted as a professional wrestling villain. He had a planned fight with Jerry "The King" Lawler on a talk show. People did not know it was a planned act for many years.

Kaufman's life was full of surprises and big ideas. He once took an entire audience on 24 buses to eat milk and cookies. He even had a trick where a "grandmother" turned out to be the comedian Robin Williams. He was born in New York City on January 17, 1949. He grew up in a family with a brother and a sister. Kaufman died of lung cancer on May 16, 1984. He was only 35 years old when he passed away. Some people even joked that his death was a prank.
