Born in 1793, he was trained to be a lawyer in Massachusetts. He eventually changed his career to become a Christian minister. In 1821, he began working with the Choctaw people in Mississippi. At that time, the Choctaw language was spoken but not written down. Byington saw a way to help by creating a written system. He spent nearly 50 years helping to turn the spoken words into a written language.

To do this work, Byington had to learn how the language functioned. He developed an orthography, which is a set of rules for writing.

He used the Roman alphabet, similar to English, to create new spellings. He worked to build a lexicon, which is a very detailed book of words. He also wanted to translate religious texts like hymns and Bible passages. This required him to find the exact Choctaw words for English ideas. His work helped create one of the most complete word books for a Native American language.

Byington's journey was deeply tied to the history of the United States. In 1835, the government began moving Native Americans to new lands. This was called the Indian Removal policy. Because of this, Byington and his family moved to the new Choctaw homeland. They set up a mission near a place called Eagletown.

His life was not always easy during these changes. He faced many difficult moments while living in the new territory.

Family life was also very hard for the Byingtons. Many people in their area suffered from local illnesses. Cyrus and his wife, Sophia Nye, both became very sick several times. Sadly, Byington lost his sister to illness in 1839. He also lost his two sons, one at age eleven and one at age two.

Later, Cyrus faced hard choices regarding slavery. His church leaders and the Choctaw leaders had very different views. Even when his sponsors stopped giving him money, he chose to stay at his post.

Byington's legacy lives on through the books he left behind. He finished translating the first five books of the Bible before he died.

He passed away on December 31, 1868, while working on a grammar book. His dictionary and grammar books were published after his death. These tools helped others learn and use the Choctaw language. The Choctaw language is part of the Muskogean language family. It is also closely related to the Chickasaw language.
