He is famous for creating a new way to write. This system is called the Pahawh script. It is a semi-syllabary for writing Hmong and Khmu languages. Some Hmong people call him the "Mother of Writing." This title shows how much they value his gift. He wanted to help his people succeed and grow.

Yang learned his writing system through a special way. In 1959, he had a series of divine revelations. In these visions, a set of male twins taught him. They showed him how to use the Pahawh script. He used these signs to write down many words. He then began teaching the script to others. He believed this would help people escape hard times. He hoped the groups using it would flourish.

Yang was born on September 15, 1929. He was born in the village of Fi Tong. This village is in Vietnam, near Nong Het, Laos. As a young man, he could not read or write. He spent much of his life working hard. He worked as a farmer to make a living. He also worked as a basket maker. He observed writing systems but made his own.

His life was tied to the Laotian Civil War. This was a time of great conflict in Laos. Because of his work, Yang became a target. He was suspected by many different groups. He was killed in February 1971 in Nam Chia. This happened during the middle of the war. He had finished his final version of the script. A man named Nos Toom Yang killed him.

Yang's work is still very important today. His script is found in many different books. One book is titled "Mother of Writing." It was published in 1990 by three researchers. These researchers were William A. Smalley, Chia Koua Vang, and Gnia Yee Yang. Yang is like Sequoyah from the Cherokee people. Sequoyah also created a writing system for his people. Both men changed how their cultures share stories.
