Suraphol Sombatcharoen was a famous singer from Thailand.

He was a very important star of a music style called luk thung. People often called him the "King of Luk Thung." Some people even called him the "Thai Elvis." His music was special because it mixed many different sounds together. It used rhythms from Cuba and Malay pop. It also used styles from American country music and Hollywood films. This unique sound helped make luk thung a major part of Thai culture.

Suraphol had a very interesting path to becoming a star. He first joined the Navy to study to be a nurse. He loved singing so much that he would sneak out at night to perform. This got him into trouble with his commander. He was sent to a Navy prison for this. While there, he became a hero to other inmates by singing to them before they slept. Later, he joined the Air Force. A man named Flight Lieutenant Pramote Wannapong asked him to join the Air Force band.

Suraphol began his career as a singer in the 1950s. He was born Lamduan Sombatcharoen in the Suphan Buri province. He chose Suraphol as his stage name for his music career. His first big hit song came out in 1954. It was called "Nam Ta Lao Wieng," which means "Tears of a Lao Girl." This song helped show the world the new luk thung style. During the 1960s, he was one of the most famous performers in Thailand.

Suraphol was a very hard worker who wrote more than 100 songs. Some of his famous songs include "Sao Suan Taeng" and "Mong." He also wrote "Nam Ta Ja Tho" and "Khong Plom." One of his most famous songs is "Siphok Pi Haeng Khwam Lang." This song is about 16 years of a marriage. Sadly, he was killed by an unknown person in 1968. This happened in Nakhon Pathom after he finished a live show.

Even though he passed away, his music is still heard everywhere in Thailand. You can hear his recordings in big malls in Bangkok or in small rural markets. His family also kept the music alive. His son, Surachai Sombatcharoen, appeared in a documentary about the music. His grandson, Surabodin Sombatcharoen, also became a singer. Surabodin made his debut in 2001 at the Thailand Cultural Centre. He was only 16 years old when he sang his grandfather's famous songs.
