He was born in a village in Vietnam. He grew up without learning to read or write. He worked as a farmer and made baskets.

In 1959, Yang had many visions. In these visions, male twins taught him a new way to write. He called this the Pahawh script. This system uses signs to write Hmong and Khmu words. Yang wanted to teach this script to his people. He believed it would help them flourish.

Some people call him the Mother of Writing. He was like Sequoyah, who made a writing system for the Cherokee people. Yang finished his final version of the script before he died. He was killed in 1971 during the Laotian Civil War. This happened because different groups were fighting. Many people still honor his work today. His writing system is found in many books. It helps people share their language and stories.
