He was born in 1793. He first trained to be a lawyer. Later, he became a minister.

In 1821, he began working with the Choctaw people. At that time, their language was not written down. Cyrus learned to speak Choctaw. He also made a way to write it using an alphabet.

He worked for nearly 50 years to help write the language. He made a large book of words. This book is called a lexicon. It is one of the most complete for a Native American language. He also translated the first five books of the Bible into Choctaw.

Life was often hard for his family. Many people in their area got sick. Cyrus and his wife both fell ill many times. Sadly, his sister and his two sons also died from sickness.

Cyrus also faced hard choices. His church leaders and the Choctaw leaders disagreed about slavery. Some people stopped giving him money because of these fights. Even so, Cyrus stayed to help the people. He died in 1868 while still working on a grammar book.
