Long ago, their ancestors built large cities. They made big mounds of earth. These people were expert farmers. They grew crops like corn in large fields.

In the 1500s, Spanish explorers arrived. One leader was named Hernando de Soto. His group brought new sicknesses to the land. Many Muscogee people died from these illnesses. Later, the Muscogee formed a large group called a confederacy. This was a group of many tribes working together. They lived in towns with leaders called micos. Micos led the people by asking for agreement.

In the 1800s, things changed for the Muscogee. The United States government wanted their land. Many Muscogee people were forced to move. This move was part of the Trail of Tears. They were sent to a new place called Indian Territory.
