Cynisca was a famous princess from the ancient Greek city of Sparta.

Her name meant "little hound" in Ancient Greek. This name might have been a nickname for a woman who liked hunting. She was born into a very wealthy royal family. Her father was King Archidamus II and her mother was Eupolia. Because she was a Spartan princess, she had more freedom than many other women. Spartan women often trained in sports to stay strong. They believed strong women would have strong children for the army.

Cynisca was very ambitious and loved horses.

She was the first woman to breed horses for racing. She did not drive the chariots herself. Instead, she hired skilled drivers called charioteers to race her horses. She trained her own team of animals for the big events. This required a lot of skill and money. In the ancient world, women could only enter Olympic races by owning the horses. This was the way they could compete in the games.

Her big success happened during the Olympic Games.

In 396 BC, she entered the four-horse chariot race, known as the tethrippon. She won first prize at about 40 years old. This made her the first woman to ever win at the Olympics. She did not stop there. In 392 BC, she entered her racing team again. She won a second victory in the same event. These wins brought great fame to her family and her home.

Cynisca wanted everyone to remember her great wins.

She gave a set of bronze statues to the Temple of Zeus. These statues showed her, her charioteer, her chariot, and her horses. She also left a stone message called an inscription. It said she was the only woman in all Hellas to win that crown. In Sparta, people even built a special shrine for her. This was a huge honor that only Spartan kings usually received.

Her victories changed things for other women in Greece. Many other women, like Euryleonis and Berenike, went on to race horses too. Some even tried to claim they were as famous as Cynisca. Today, her name is still used to honor women in sports. There is a professional cycling team called Cynisca Cycling in the United States. There are also groups like Kyniska Advocacy and Kyniska Hoops. Her story of skill and ambition lives on through these names.
