Winning is a huge honor for competitors. Many countries give winners extra cash or gifts. In the 2024 Paris Games, 33 countries promised prizes. Fifteen of those countries offered cash over $100,000. Every athlete who finishes in the top eight also gets an Olympic diploma.

Making these medals is a very careful process. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) sets the rules for them. They decide on the final design and the physical properties. Most medals are circular. They usually have a ribbon or chain to wear. They must be at least 60 mm wide and 3 mm thick.

The gold medal is actually mostly silver. It is plated with 6 grams of gold. At the 2020 Tokyo Games, these medals were worth about $800. The silver medal is 92.5% silver. The bronze medal is mostly copper with some tin and zinc.

Medals have a very long history. In the Ancient Olympic Games, winners did not get metal. They received wreaths made from wild-olive branches.

Some say Heracles first gave these as prizes. When the modern Games began in 1896 in Athens, things changed. The first winners received silver medals and olive branches. Runners-up received a laurel branch and a copper or bronze medal.

Designs have changed many times over the years. In 1928, a design called Trionfo was chosen. It featured Nike, the goddess of victory.

This design stayed popular for many decades. However, some people in Greece were unhappy with it. They noticed it showed the Roman Colosseum. They felt it should have shown the Greek Parthenon instead.

In 2004, the design finally changed to the Panathenaic Stadium. This was a way to show Olympic values more clearly.

Winter Olympic medals are quite different from Summer ones. They do not always have one common design. They often feature beautiful snowflakes.

They are also usually larger, thicker, and heavier. Some hosts have used very unusual materials. For example, medals were made of glass, lacquer, or even sparagmite.
