In Greece, these races were part of important religious festivals. They were also used in funeral games for the wealthy. Owning horses and chariots was very expensive. Because of this, only the richest people could afford to own them. Winning a race helped a person grow their reputation. People even wrote poems to celebrate these great victories.

Watching a race was an intense experience. Drivers stood up in wooden, two-wheeled carts. They wore a long garment called a xystis. This clothing reached their ankles and was held by a belt.

The ride was very bumpy because the chariot rested on its axle. Drivers often used two or four horses to pull them. The middle horses did the heavy pulling using a yoke. The other horses helped guide the way. The turns at the end of the track were the most dangerous parts. Chariots could flip over or crash during these fast turns.

History shows that racing has been around for a very long time. Pottery from the thirteenth century BC shows racing in Mycenaean Greece. The famous poet Homer wrote about chariot races in the Iliad. In his story, Diomedes won a race at a funeral. Legend also says a race helped start the Olympic Games. A man named Pelops won a race against King Oenomaus. This victory led to the founding of the Games.

Later, the Eleans founded the official Olympic Games in 776 BC. These games included many different types of racing events.

Many interesting facts exist about the people who raced. In Greece, most drivers were slaves or hired professionals. Even though they were often low in status, winners were famous. A Spartan woman named Cynisca actually won two Olympic races as an owner.

In Rome, racing was the most popular public show. Drivers picked colors like Blue, Green, Red, or White. Fans would pick a team and cheer for them. Some winners became incredibly wealthy from their prizes. They could earn more money than famous lawyers or senators.

Chariot racing eventually changed how people lived and ruled. In Rome, emperors even took control of the racing teams. They did this because they did not trust private groups. In the Byzantine Empire, the Blue and Green teams were very powerful. They fought over religion and politics. This fighting even led to the Nika riots.

Eventually, the sport began to fade away. This happened because it became too expensive to run. The high costs and a failing economy brought the era of racing to an end.
