It officially began in 1966. Mao Zedong was the chairman of the Communist Party. He wanted to protect Chinese communism. He believed that capitalist ideas were entering society. Mao wanted to remove these old ways. This movement changed life for many people. It lasted until Mao died in 1976.

To start the movement, Mao called on young people.

Many students formed groups called Red Guards. They traveled throughout the country to find change. These groups wanted to destroy the "Four Olds." This meant old ideas, culture, customs, and habits. They destroyed many historical artifacts and religious sites. People also studied quotes from Mao very closely. This created a strong cult of personality around him.

Things became very chaotic during this time.

In 1967, radicals began taking power from local governments. They set up new revolutionary committees. These groups often fought with each other. This led to armed clashes between different factions. Many people were treated very unfairly during the struggle. Schools and universities were closed for a long time. The National College Entrance Examinations were even cancelled.

This period was very violent for the nation.

Estimates say one to two million people died. Many people were persecuted for their beliefs. Some were part of the "Five Black Categories." Intellectuals were even called the "Stinking Old Ninth." Over 10 million youth moved to the countryside. This was part of the Down to the Countryside Movement. Many massacres happened in places like Beijing and Yunnan.

After Mao died, the country began to change.

In 1978, Deng Xiaoping became the new leader. He replaced Hua Guofeng. Deng started a program to fix the country. This was called Reform and Opening up. It helped dismantle the old ideas of the revolution. In 1981, the Communist Party admitted many failures. They said the movement caused heavy losses for the people. Today, people have many different memories of this time.
