The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was a massive sociopolitical movement in the People's Republic of China.

It was launched by Mao Zedong, the chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), in 1966. The movement lasted until Mao's death in 1976. Mao's stated goal was to preserve Chinese communism. He wanted to purge capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society. He believed bourgeois elements had infiltrated the government and society. These elements allegedly aimed to restore capitalism within the nation.

The movement functioned through mass mobilization and political upheaval. In May 1966, Mao used the Cultural Revolution Group to launch the movement. He called on young people to "bombard the headquarters." He proclaimed that "to rebel is justified." This led to the formation of Red Guards. These were cadres of young people, mainly students, who responded to Mao's call.

They traveled throughout the country to spread revolutionary ideas. During this time, quotations from Chairman Mao became revered. This created a powerful cult of personality around his leadership.

There were distinct stages and factions during this decade of chaos. The early phase, from spring 1966 to summer 1968, focused on mass movement.

In 1967, radicals began seizing power from local governments and party branches. They established new revolutionary committees to replace existing systems. These committees often split into rival factions. This division precipitated armed clashes among the radical groups. After Lin Biao fell from power in 1971, the Gang of Four became influential. The revolution continued until 1976 when the Gang of Four was arrested.

The history of the movement is tied to previous political tensions. Before the PRC was founded, the term "cultural revolution" meant eliminating illiteracy. After 1949, Mao launched the Campaign to Suppress Counterrevolutionaries to secure his government. Tensions also rose due to the Sino-Soviet split. Mao viewed Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev as a "revisionist." He believed Khrushchev was altering Marxist-Leninist concepts. This caused a breakdown in relations between the two communist giants. Mao also feared capitalist tendencies were growing within China's own borders.

The significance of the movement is seen in its massive social impact. Estimates of the death toll vary widely between 1 and 2 million people.

Tens of millions of people were persecuted during this time. Many were members of the "Five Black Categories." Intellectuals and scientists were labeled the "Stinking Old Ninth." The Red Guards sought to destroy the "Four Olds." This included old ideas, culture, customs, and habits. They destroyed many historical artifacts and religious sites.

Notable examples of the chaos include the disruption of daily life and education. Schools and universities were closed for long periods. The National College Entrance Examinations were cancelled entirely. Over 10 million youth from urban areas were relocated. This was known as the Down to the Countryside Movement.

High-ranking officials like Liu Shaoqi and Deng Xiaoping were also persecuted. Massacres occurred in several regions, including Beijing, Guangdong, and Yunnan. These events contributed to what many call the "ten years of havoc."

After the movement, China began a period of major transition. In December 1978, Deng Xiaoping became the new paramount leader. He replaced Hua Guofeng and initiated the Reform and Opening up policy.

He also introduced the Boluan Fanzheng program. These efforts gradually dismantled the ideology of the Cultural Revolution. In 1981, the Communist Party officially acknowledged the movement's failures. They stated it caused the most severe setbacks for the country since 1949. Today, memories of this era remain complex and varied in China.
