It began in 1966. Mao Zedong was the leader of China. He wanted to keep communist ideas strong. He wanted to remove old ways from society.

Mao asked young people to help him. Many students formed groups called Red Guards.

They wanted to destroy the "Four Olds." These were old ideas, customs, and culture. Red Guards broke many old things and sites. They even destroyed historical items.

This time was very chaotic and violent. Many people were treated very unfairly. Schools and colleges were closed for a long time. Over 10 million young people were moved to the countryside.

Estimates say one to two million people died.

The movement ended after Mao died in 1976. New leaders like Deng Xiaoping took over. They began to fix the country. In 1981, the party said the movement caused great loss. It was a very hard time for China.
