Between 1959 and 1961, China went through a great famine. This means many people did not have enough food to eat. It was a very sad time. Some people think 30 to 46 million people died from hunger.

Many things caused this hunger. The leaders started a plan called the Great Leap Forward. They moved farmers away from their fields. These farmers went to make steel in backyard furnaces instead.

New farming rules also failed. People planted seeds too close together. They also plowed the soil too deep. At the same time, the government tried to kill sparrows.

Without sparrows, many insects ate the crops.

Local leaders also made mistakes. Some told the government they had more food than they really did. This made the state take too much grain from the people. Bad weather like floods also made things worse.

Later, the government said the famine happened because of these mistakes.
