The Gang of Four was a group of four powerful leaders in China. They were members of the Chinese Communist Party. This group became very important during the Cultural Revolution. This was a time of big changes in the country. Jiang Qing was the leader of this group. She was also the last wife of the leader Mao Zedong. The other three members were Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen.

This group used many ways to gain and keep their power. They used newspapers to spread their specific ideas to the public. They also used urban militia groups to help them. These militias were groups of people ready to act on their orders. The group also controlled the country's cultural tools. Jiang Qing, who was a former film actress, was in charge of this. This helped the group influence what people saw and heard.

History shows that the group's rise started with a single article. In November 1965, Yao Wenyuan wrote a piece in a newspaper. This article criticized a play called Hai Rui Dismissed from Office. This writing is often called the spark for the Cultural Revolution. The group became most powerful during the later years of this movement. They were leaders in the city of Shanghai. They helped secure that city for Mao Zedong.

Things changed quickly after Chairman Mao died on September 9, 1976. The group lost its hold on the government very fast. A new leader named Hua Guofeng took control. He won the support of the army leaders. On October 6, 1976, Hua had the four leaders arrested.
