Cricket is a strategic bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players.

At the center of the playing field is a rectangular area called the pitch. Each end of the pitch features a wicket, which consists of three wooden stumps with two small sticks called bails balanced on top.

The game is a contest of skill between the batting team, which seeks to score runs, and the fielding team, which seeks to dismiss the batters. This sport is cherished globally for its deep traditions and the intense competition it fosters among players and fans alike.

The mechanism of play involves a bowler delivering a ball toward a striker at the wicket. The striker uses a wooden bat to hit the ball and attempts to score runs. One way to score is to hit the ball and run to the opposite end of the pitch, swapping places with a nonstriker.

Each successful swap earns one run for the batting team. Additional runs are awarded if the ball reaches the field's boundary or if the bowler delivers an illegal ball. To stop the scoring, the fielding team must dismiss the batters, often called getting them "out."

Common dismissals include being bowled, catching the ball before it hits the ground, or hitting the wicket before the batter reaches the crease.

Cricket is played in several distinct formats that vary in duration and style. Test matches are the most traditional form and can last up to five days.

In these matches, players typically wear traditional all-white kits. In contrast, the Twenty20 format, or T20, is a much faster version of the game. In T20, each team bats for a single innings consisting of 20 overs. An over is a set of six fair deliveries.

These matches are shorter, usually lasting between three and four hours, and players often wear colorful team clothing.

The history of cricket suggests it originated as a children's game in South East England during the medieval period. The earliest definite reference comes from a 1597 court case in Guildford. A witness named John Derrick testified that he had played the game as a boy roughly fifty years earlier.

Early bats were shaped differently, resembling hockey sticks, because the ball was bowled underarm along the ground. As the sport evolved, the bowling style changed around 1760 to include pitching or bouncing the ball. This technical shift led to the development of the straight bat used today.

As the sport grew in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became a major English pursuit supported by wealthy patrons and betting. This era saw the rise of both professional players and amateurs. The term "amateur" often referred to players from higher social classes, such as those educated at Oxford or Cambridge.

Because the ball is so hard, players often wear protective gear to prevent injury. The game's rules, known as the Laws of Cricket, are maintained by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London. Cricket remains connected to other bat-and-ball games, but it is unique due to the requirement of defending the specific target of the wicket.
