A court of equity helps make things fair.

Sometimes, old laws are too stiff. They might not fix every problem. These courts use special rules to help. They look at what is right and fair.

In England, these courts began a long time ago. In the 13th century, the King made the Chancery Division. At first, it was not a real court. It was part of the King's office. A leader called the Chancellor helped people. He listened to their pleas for help. He used his own sense of what was right. By the 1500s, it became a real court. It had its own ways of working.

Later, the system changed again. In 1873, new laws were passed in England. These laws merged equity courts with law courts. This made things much faster for people. Now, most courts can use both sets of rules. They work together to find the best fix.

In the United States, some states still keep them separate. Federal courts in the U.S. use both together.
