Constitutional law is a set of rules for a country. These rules define how a government works. They show the roles of different groups. One group is the executive. This group leads the country. Another group is the legislature. This group makes laws. The third group is the judiciary. This group includes the courts.

These laws also protect human rights. Human rights are basic freedoms for all people. Some countries have a single book of rules. This is called a codified constitution. The United States and France use these. Other places, like the United Kingdom, do not have one book. They use many different rules instead.

Constitutional law also helps divide power. This is called the separation of powers. It keeps any one group from having too much control. Some countries also use a federal system. This means power is shared between a central government and local states.
