Constitutional law is a special set of rules for a country. These rules define how a government works and what it can do. It sets the roles for different parts of the state. One part is the executive, which leads the nation. Another part is the legislature, which makes the laws. The third part is the judiciary, which includes the courts.

These laws also decide the relationship between a government and its people. They can give a government power to tax and spend for everyone. They can also place limits on what leaders are allowed to do. For example, they can stop a person from being arrested without a good reason.

Many countries use a system called the separation of powers. This means power is split into three branches to keep things fair. This is often called horizontal separation of powers. Some countries also use vertical separation of powers. This is also known as decentralization. In a federal state, like India or the United States, power is shared. A central government works alongside state or provincial governments.

In the United States, there are even separate federal and state courts. India uses one judiciary divided into district courts, high courts, and the Supreme Court of India.

Some nations have a single document called a codified constitution. The United States, India, and Singapore use these written texts. Other places, like the United Kingdom, do not have one single book. Instead, they use uncodified rules like statutes and conventions. Canada is another example of a country with an uncodified constitution. However, Canada does use the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to protect people.

These rules help ensure that everyone knows the law of the land. This law can come from many places, such as international agreements.

Constitutional law is very important for protecting human rights. These are the basic freedoms of every person. Many countries have a bill of rights to protect these liberties. The United Nations even has the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is an international example meant to set high standards for all nations.

In the past, important court cases helped shape these rights. One famous case was Entick v Carrington. In this case, a man named John Entick had his house searched. The court ruled that the government could not just take property without a law. This helped make sure that rights are protected by the law.

There is also a concept called the rule of law. This means the government must follow the law just like everyone else. A thinker named A. V. Dicey helped explain this idea. He said that the law must be supreme over any single person's power. He also said that everyone is equal before the law. This means no one is above the law, no matter their rank.

Constitutional law also covers election law. This includes rules for who can vote and how to count ballots. These rules help turn the will of the people into a working democracy.
