The Counter-Reformation was a time of big changes for the Catholic Church.

It was a period of renewal and growth. This movement happened as a response to the Protestant Reformation. Many people had new ideas about faith at this time. The Church wanted to find its own way forward. This period is also known as the Catholic Revival. It helped shape how the Church worked for a very long time.

To make these changes, the Church used many different tools. One major way was through the decrees of the Council of Trent.

They created seminaries to train priests in their spiritual lives. These schools helped priests learn the traditions of the Church. The Church also worked to stop corruption and unfairness. New religious orders were formed to help people in new ways. Some groups even used music and singing to reach others.

This era began with the Council of Trent in 1545.

This important meeting lasted until 1563. Some historians say the period ended in 1648. This was when the European wars of religion finally finished. Pope Paul III was a key leader during this time. He was the first pope to lead the Counter-Reformation. He started the Council of Trent to fix problems in the Church.

Many specific rules and groups emerged during these years. The Council of Trent reaffirmed the seven sacraments. It also upheld the belief in transubstantiation. This is the belief that bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. In 1570, Pope Pius V made the Tridentine Mass the standard way to pray. New groups like the Jesuits were officially recognized in 1540. Other groups like the Ursulines started in 1535. These people traveled to many parts of the world to share their faith.

These historical events changed how people lived and thought. The movement led to a flourishing of new art and music styles. It also caused some people to move to new lands as refugees. This happened because of wars and new laws. Some thinkers used the term "Catholic Reformation" to describe these internal changes. Others used "Counter-Reformation" to describe the response to Protestantism. Today, we can see how these old debates still matter to history.
