A man named Mark the Evangelist founded the Church of Alexandria around 42 to 44 AD. Many native Egyptians joined this new faith very quickly. Within fifty years, Christianity spread throughout the whole country. People even began to write religious texts in their local language. They called this language Coptic. This history is very old and still continues today.

In the city of Alexandria, people built a very famous school. The Catechetical School of Alexandria was the oldest school of its kind.

It was a place for deep learning and big ideas. Students did not just study religion there. They also studied science, math, and the humanities. A famous scholar named Origen lived and worked there. He wrote over 6,000 commentaries on the Bible. Some blind scholars even used wood-carving to read and write.

During the 3rd and 4th centuries, a new way of life began. Many Christians moved into the quiet desert to pray and work. They lived in small cells or caves to be alone with God. This movement is called monasticism.

Leaders like Anthony the Great and Pachomius helped organize this way of life. By the end of the 5th century, there were hundreds of monasteries in the desert. This Egyptian way of living influenced many other Christian groups later on.

Coptic people were also known for making beautiful things. They were skilled at many different types of crafts and artwork.

In the city of Alexandria, artists made very ornate items. One special find was an embroidered tapestry in an Upper Egyptian tomb. It used white linen threads and red woolen threads. Even though some items were lost when the Library of Alexandria was destroyed, many pieces still exist. You can see these beautiful items in museums today.

Later, important meetings called councils were held to discuss faith.

In 325 AD, the Council of Nicaea helped create the Nicene Creed. Other big meetings happened in 381 AD and 431 AD. In 451 AD, the Council of Chalcedon caused a big split. Many Egyptians rejected the decisions made at that meeting. They stayed faithful to their own native church. This led to the Coptic Orthodox Church we know today. After Arab conquests, most people in Egypt became Muslim, leaving Copts as a minority.
