They are descendants of the ancient Egyptians. Most Copts follow the Coptic Orthodox Church. Some also belong to the Coptic Catholic Church or the Alexandrian Greek Orthodox Church. They are the largest Christian group in Egypt and the Middle East.

They also make up a large Christian population in Sudan and Libya. Today, Copts make up about 5 to 15 percent of Egypt's people.

Coptic identity is built on many special traditions. They use a unique Coptic calendar. This calendar is based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. It is still very important for their religious services. They also have a special kind of music. Many people think this music includes sounds from early Egyptian traditions.

Their language is also very important. Coptic is the final stage of the ancient Egyptian language. It is a direct descendant of the Demotic Egyptian spoken long ago.

History tells us how these traditions began.

Ancient tradition says St. Mark brought Christianity to Egypt. This happened in Alexandria around 42 AD. This was during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius. Soon, Christianity spread all across the country. By the 3rd century AD, Christians were the majority in Egypt. The Church of Alexandria became one of the most important churches in the world. It is the oldest Christian church in Africa.

Over many centuries, the Copts lived through many changes.

After the Muslim conquest of Egypt between 639 and 646 AD, the term "Copt" began to mean native Christians. This was because many others converted to Islam. During these times, the treatment of Copts changed often. Sometimes rulers were tolerant. Other times, Copts faced hard periods of persecution. These stories of struggle and strength are a big part of their identity.

Copts have always been part of Egyptian life.
