A man named Mark the Evangelist started the church in Alexandria. Many Egyptians joined this new faith. Soon, they began to write in their own language. They called this language Coptic.

In Alexandria, people built a famous school. It was the oldest school of its kind. Students studied science and math there. They also studied religion. Some scholars even used wood-carving to read and write.

In the 3rd and 4th centuries, many people went to the desert. They lived in caves to pray and work. This was the start of monasticism. These people are often called the Desert Fathers.
