A conversation is a special way that people connect. It happens when two or more people talk together.

Most experts say a real conversation is informal and equal. This means no one person is just giving orders to another. Instead, people use talk to build and keep social ties. This helps friends and families stay close to one another. Some people use small talk to bond with others. They might talk about the weather just to be friendly.

Even though we use words, much more is happening. Some say 85% of our meaning comes from body language. A simple smile or a shrug tells a big story.

There are many different ways to use your voice. One fun way is called banter. Banter is a fast game of witty sentences. It is like a friendly battle of wits between people. Participants use clever jokes or puns to top each other.

They must follow certain rules so no one gets hurt. Another way to talk is through a discussion. This is when people share their opinions on a subject. In polite groups, people change the topic before it becomes a fight. You can also have a conversation with yourself. This can help you solve a hard problem or feel better.

People have studied how we talk for a long time. In 1936, Milton Wright wrote a book called The Art of Conversation. He viewed talking as a creative art that people can play with. Other writers like Bruce Patton and Sheila Heen have studied difficult talks. They teach tools for handling big disagreements at home or work. In 2011, William C. Martell wrote about the structure of banter. He looked at how films use these witty talks. Movies like His Girl Friday from 1940 use this style. These writers help us understand how words bring us together.

Science gives us some very interesting facts about talking. A study in July 2007 looked at how much we speak. Researcher Matthias Mehl found that men and women talk about the same amount. On average, each gender uses about 16,000 words every single day. We also see special talks between strangers on planes or buses. People often share private stories when they are traveling together. Even computers try to learn this skill. The Turing test checks if a machine can talk like a human. A judge tries to tell the difference between a person and a computer.

Conversations help us understand the world around us. We can talk about facts or our own personal ideas. We can even talk about other people through gossip. Some people use talk to get attention for themselves. Sociologist Charles Derber calls this conversational narcissism. He says people sometimes shift the focus back to themselves. However, a good friend uses a support-response instead. They keep the focus on what the other person said. This way of listening helps everyone feel heard and valued.
