This happens when two or more people share ideas or feelings. It is not just about the words we speak. We also use nonverbal cues like our body language. These cues can happen in physical spaces or psychological spaces. In psychological spaces, we think about emotions and different cultures.

Researchers study many things about how we connect with others. They look at how we adapt when talking face-to-face. They also study how technology changes our social interactions.

Communication works like a dance between people.

This is called being transactional. It means both people must participate for it to work. You can plan what you want to say. This is called intentional communication. However, you might also share things by accident. This is called unintentional communication. Once you say something, you cannot take it back. This makes communication irreversible. Every single conversation is also unrepeatable because moods and people change.

People have used communication to build relationships for a long time. Long ago, humans used pictures and carvings to send messages. Later, these grew into words and spoken language. The study of this topic became more formal in the 1970s. Before that, people studied things like persuasion and dialogue. The Industrial Revolution caused a shift in how we connect. As technology grew, our methods changed too. We moved from face-to-face talks to using tools like the telegraph.

Scientists have created theories to explain how we interact. One idea is Uncertainty Reduction Theory from 1975. It says we want to learn about strangers to feel less unsure. We might observe them or ask them questions to gain knowledge. Another idea is Social Exchange Theory from 1959. This theory says people weigh the rewards against the costs in a relationship.

If the rewards are higher, the relationship might grow. For example, marriage can provide emotional security as a reward. People try to maximize their good experiences in social bonds.

Interpersonal communication connects to almost everything in our daily lives. It happens between many different types of people. You might talk to a teacher, a parent, or a friend. It also happens in small groups like a family. Today, we use social media to communicate with others. This is called computer-mediated communication. Even though it is not face-to-face, it is still interpersonal. It helps us form and even end our relationships.
