Interpersonal communication

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Interpersonal communication is the exchange of information between two or more people. It is a complex field of research focused on how humans use verbal and nonverbal cues. These cues help people reach personal and relational goals. Communication occurs within both physical and psychological spaces. Physical spaces involve visual and nonverbal cues in our surroundings. Psychological spaces involve self-awareness and an understanding of emotions or cultures.

Researchers study several specific categories of inquiry regarding these interactions. They examine how people adapt their verbal and nonverbal communication during face-to-face meetings. They also study how messages are produced and how uncertainty affects behavior. Other areas of study include deceptive communication and relational dialectics. Scientists also look at social interactions that are mediated by technology. This field is quite complex because researchers use many different theoretical traditions.

Interpersonal communication often involves people who are interdependent. This means they have some level of knowledge about one another. Examples include a father and son, or a teacher and a student. It can also involve two friends, two lovers, or an employer and an employee. While it usually happens between pairs, it can include small groups like a family. Communication can be face-to-face or happen through social media platforms.

Communication is described as a transactional process. This means it is a dynamic interaction where all participants must contribute. A helpful metaphor is dancing. Like dancers, communicators must constantly work together to succeed. Communication can also be intentional or unintentional. You might carefully plan a conversation to ask for a promotion. However, you might also communicate something unintentionally if a friend overhears your private complaints.

There are two important rules regarding the nature of communication. First, communication is irreversible. You can apologize for something you said, but you cannot take the words back. Second, communication is unrepeatable. An act of communication can never be exactly duplicated. This is because the audience, the mood, or the relationship may change. These factors ensure that every interaction is a unique event.

History shows that communication methods have changed alongside technology. Long ago, humans used pictures and carvings to transfer messages. As language developed, these evolved into words and expressions. The Industrial Revolution caused a major shift in how people connected. Communication moved from purely face-to-face interactions to mediated forms. Tools like the telegraph and telephone were added over time. Today, most humans rely on mediated communication to form or end relationships.

Several theories help explain these human connections. Uncertainty Reduction Theory, developed in 1975, suggests that people seek information to reduce the discomfort of not knowing others. Strangers use passive, active, or interactive strategies to learn about each other. Social Exchange Theory, based on work from 1959, views relationships like economic transactions. It suggests people weigh the rewards against the costs of an interaction. If rewards like emotional security outweigh the costs, intimacy grows.

Finally, the theory of symbolic interaction focuses on shared meaning. This comes from a socio-cultural perspective where people create structure in society through interaction. People act based on the meanings they assign to objects, events, and other people. This process involves the concepts of society, self, and mind. By interacting over time, people develop a shared understanding of the world. This helps them navigate complex social networks and various life stages.
