Nonverbal communication

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Nonverbal communication is the transmission of messages through platforms other than spoken words. This process includes eye contact, known as oculesics, and body language, called kinesics. It also involves social distance, or proxemics, and the use of touch, known as haptics. People also communicate through voice characteristics, such as pitch and loudness, which is called paralanguage. Even physical environments and the objects we use serve as nonverbal channels. This system is essential because it allows us to convey complex emotions and social meanings. Scholars argue that these nonverbal channels can often convey more meaning than verbal communication alone.

This communication process functions through two main stages: encoding and decoding. Encoding is the ability to express emotions through signals like facial expressions or gestures. These signals are generated to be interpreted by a receiver. Decoding is the process of interpreting those received sensations. This skill is often referred to as nonverbal sensitivity. It is the ability to accurately interpret an encoded emotion as the sender intended.

When these processes work together, they allow for a holistic exchange of information.

Researchers classify nonverbal communication into three principal areas. The first area involves the environmental conditions where the communication occurs. The second area focuses on the physical characteristics of the communicators themselves. The third area examines the specific behaviors of communicators during an interaction.

Within these areas, signals can be conscious or unconscious. Some signals, like microexpressions, are fleeting and involuntary. These tiny facial movements occur in a fraction of a second. They can reveal genuine feelings that might differ from a person's spoken words.

Scientific study of this field began in 1872. This was the year Charles Darwin published "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals."

Darwin observed interactions between animals like lions, tigers, and dogs. He realized that animals also communicate through gestures and expressions. Darwin argued that all mammals show emotion through facial expressions. He believed these expressions were "serviceable associated habits." For example, baring teeth might have been a necessary act before an assault in evolutionary history. He suggested that humans continue these expressions because they have acquired communicative value.

Nonverbal communication is incredibly powerful in social settings. For instance, impressions of others are formed on average within the first four seconds of contact. When absorbing a message, people use all five senses. This sensory breakdown includes 83% sight, 11% hearing, 3% smell, 2% touch, and 1% taste. In specific situations involving feelings or attitudes, the "7-38-55 rule" is often cited. Based on research by Albert Mehrabian, this rule suggests 7% of meaning comes from words, 38% from tone of voice, and 55% from facial expressions.

While this rule applies to specific contexts, ignoring nonverbal cues can cause a listener to miss up to 60% of communication.

Cultural context significantly influences how these signals are used and understood. In many Indigenous American communities, silence and subtle cues are vital for deciphering messages. In these cultures, nonverbal cues impact how learning activities are organized. Children in these communities often learn through observing and participating in cultural practices.

Some behaviors, such as smiling, crying, or pointing, may form a universal language system. These allow for basic communication even when language barriers exist. However, other cues are culture-specific and require sensitivity to avoid misunderstandings.

Nonverbal communication is omnipresent and functions in many different ways. It is integrated into every single communication act. It can even be found in written digital formats. E-mails and social media use emoticons, font colors, and pictures to capture nonverbal cues.

Because nonverbal behaviors are multifunctional, they allow for simultaneous messages to be sent and received. This interconnectedness helps humans navigate social situations and establish meaningful connections. Understanding these signals provides a complete grasp of interpersonal dynamics.
