He is best known for founding the Hilton Hotels chain. This company became the world's first international hotel chain. This means his hotels were located in many different countries. His work helped many people travel for business and fun. He set a high standard for how hotels should work. This made traveling to new places feel more comfortable for everyone.

His journey into hotels began with a single building in Texas. In 1919, he bought the 40-room Mobley Hotel in Cisco, Texas.

At that time, there was a big oil boom in the area. Because of this, the hotel was very busy. People rented rooms in eight-hour shifts to make room for more guests. He even turned the dining room into extra rooms to meet the demand. This smart way of working helped him grow his business quickly.

Before he was a hotel builder, Hilton tried other jobs. He was born in San Antonio, New Mexico, in 1887. He attended several schools, including the New Mexico Military Institute. From 1912 to 1916, he served in the New Mexico Legislature. He was a Republican representative in the state's first legislature. However, he grew frustrated with the slow and dishonest parts of politics. He also served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was stationed in Paris as part of the Quartermaster Corps.

Hilton's business grew through many big purchases and hard times. He built many hotels in Texas, like the Dallas Hilton in 1925. He also bought famous places like the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. In 1954, he bought the Statler Company for $111 million. This was the largest real estate deal in the world at that time. During the Great Depression, he almost lost all his hotels. He faced bankruptcy but worked hard to regain control of his business. Eventually, he owned 188 hotels in 38 different U.S. cities.

Even though he was very wealthy, Hilton focused on helping others. He established the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in 1944. This foundation works to stop human suffering all over the world. He left most of his money to this group when he died in 1979. His son, Barron Hilton, also helped support these charitable goals. Today, many schools and buildings carry his name to honor his work. His life shows how one person can build something that reaches the whole world.
