He started with one small hotel in Texas. It was called the Mobley Hotel. This hotel was very busy. People rented rooms in eight-hour shifts. This helped him make money during an oil boom. Hilton went on to buy and build many more hotels. He created the first international hotel chain. This means his hotels were in many different countries. He owned 188 hotels in 38 cities in the U.S. He also owned 54 hotels in other lands. During a hard time called the Great Depression, he almost lost everything. He lost several hotels but worked hard to get them back. Hilton also served in the Army during World War I. He was a second lieutenant in France. Later in life, he gave most of his money to others. He started the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. This group helps to stop human suffering around the world. He died in 1979 at the age of 91.
