He was born in 1850 to a farming family. He began his career as a wine waiter. One boss even told him he would never succeed. Ritz did not listen. He moved to Paris to find work. He worked his way up from a waiter to a manager.

Ritz was a pioneer, or a leader, in the hotel world. He believed the customer is always right. If a guest disliked a meal, he replaced it instantly. He also focused on being clean. He used washable paint and light fabrics in his rooms. This helped keep everything fresh.

He worked with a famous chef named Auguste Escoffier. Together, they ran the Savoy Hotel in London. It became a huge success for rich guests. Ritz also opened the famous Hôtel Ritz in Paris. His hotels were so fancy that people used his name as a word. Today, we use the word "ritzy" to mean something high-class. He lived a very busy life and traveled often. He died in 1918.
