In the past, people lived in large groups. They needed ways to meet others with similar interests. This was true even if they were not family. Ancient Greek clubs and Roman associations called collegia existed long ago. In early England, clubs were very informal. Friends met just to eat or drink together. One group was called La Court de Bonne Compagnie. It was mentioned by Thomas Occleve during the time of Henry IV.

Many famous clubs met in taverns or coffee houses. The Friday Street Club met at the Mermaid Tavern. Members included people like John Donne and John Fletcher. Later, coffee houses became the first real clubhouses. These places were centers for social life and big ideas. Some groups, like The Rota, were for debating politics. King Charles II tried to stop coffee houses in 1675. He thought they spread false reports about his government. However, the people did not like this rule.

Clubs grew in two different ways during the 18th century. Some became permanent groups with their own buildings. These buildings are called clubhouses. Some famous clubs in London still exist today. Other clubs were for people who traveled a lot. Officers or lawyers might share a large house. This was easier than staying in a hotel. Other clubs do not have a permanent home. They might meet only for sports or art.
