In the past, people lived in large groups. They wanted to meet others who liked the same things. These people were not always family. This happened in ancient Greece and Rome.

In England, early clubs were simple. Friends met to eat or drink. Some met at taverns. One famous group was the Friday Street Club. It met at a tavern in London.

Later, coffee houses became very important. These shops were the first real clubhouses. People met there to talk and share ideas. Some clubs even talked about politics. King Charles II tried to stop these clubs. He thought they spread false news. But the people did not like his rule. The clubs stayed part of life in England.

Today, clubs come in many forms. Some clubs have a permanent building. We call this a clubhouse.
