They often worked in the same city.

Guilds have existed for a very long time. In ancient times, leaders set rules for weights and measures. In Rome, groups called collegia helped merchants work together. During the Middle Ages, guilds became very important in Europe. They made sure goods were made well. They also taught new workers through a system called apprenticeship. This is when a worker learns from a master.

Many guilds helped their members. They had funds to help people who were sick or old. They also helped widows and orphans.

Women also worked in guilds. In some cities, women ran their own businesses. They even had guilds that were mostly women.

Later, guilds began to change. Some thinkers said they stopped new ideas from growing. Most guilds ended as big factories began to rise. Today, we have groups that act like guilds. Doctors and engineers use special licenses to show they are experts.
