In Rome, some shops were even permanent.

Some merchants were very famous. The Phoenicians were great traders on the sea.

They moved wood, glass, and textiles. They were known as "traders in purple" because of a special dye. They even helped spread their alphabet.

There are two main types of merchants. Wholesale merchants deal in large amounts of goods. They often work between the maker and the shop. Retail merchants sell to the people who use the goods. A shopkeeper is a retail merchant.
