It sits in Grainger Plaza at Millennium Park. Many people call it "The Bean" because of its shape.

The artist, Anish Kapoor, was inspired by liquid mercury for his design. The sculpture acts like a bridge between the sky and the people watching it. Three-quarters of its surface reflects the sky above. This is why the artist chose the name Cloud Gate. It is a very popular place for tourists to take photos.

The sculpture is made of 168 stainless steel plates. These plates are welded together to create one smooth shape. The outside is so highly polished that you cannot see any seams.

Visitors can walk around and even under the high arch. On the underside, there is a hollow space called the omphalos. This part is shaped like a concave chamber. It works like a fun-house mirror to warp and multiply reflections. It is a very unique way to see the world.

Making the sculpture was a very hard job.

Experts worried the metal might get too hot in summer. They also feared it would be too cold in winter. Some people even thought the seamless design was impossible to build. The construction also fell behind its original schedule. The sculpture was even shown in an unfinished state during a grand opening in 2004. It was not fully dedicated until May 15, 2006.

Building the piece required many smart people and new tools. An engineering firm called Atelier One helped design the structure. Kapoor chose a team called Performance Structures, Inc. because they could make nearly invisible welds. They used computers and robots to bend the heavy steel plates. The sculpture is much heavier than anyone first thought. It was expected to weigh 66 tons, but it actually weighs 110 tons. Engineers had to make sure the ground could hold all that weight.

Cloud Gate is now a major part of Chicago's culture. Millennium Park was once filled with rail yards and parking lots. Now, it is a place where people gather to see art. In 2007, the park was the second largest tourist attraction in the city. The sculpture reflects huge buildings like the Aon Center and Two Prudential Plaza. It turns the city skyline into a twisting, moving image. It brings the sky and the streets together in one place.
